چکیده

This work addresses the issue of Zn, Cu, Pb, Cd, Ni and Cr accumulation in wildgrown plants in the context of their possible use for the sanitation of sludge and waste substrates. The highest contents of heavy metals were noted in Lactuca serriola, Chenopodium album, Artemisia vulgaris and Atriplex nitens. Assuming maximum crop production which is to be obtained from sludge and waste substrates at a level of 2 kg d.w./m, it is clear that from 1 hectare several hundred grams of Pb and Cd (as well as up to 2 kg of Cu and 20 kg of Zn) may

Phytoremediation potential of heavy metals by two native pasture plants (Eucalyptus grandis and ailanthus altissima) assisted with AMF and fibrous minerals in contaminated mining regions

The current study assesses the effect of fibrous clay minerals’ amendments and arbuscular mycorrhiza incubation on heavy metal uptake and translocation in Eucalyptus grandis and Ailanthus altissima plants. For doing so, Eucalyptus and ailanthus trees have been grown in a soil sample, contaminated with heavy metal iron ore mining and collected from southern Iran. The area under study is arid, wi...

Overexpression of glutathione synthetase in indian mustard enhances cadmium accumulation and tolerance

An important pathway by which plants detoxify heavy metals is through sequestration with heavy-metal-binding peptides called phytochelatins or their precursor, glutathione. To identify limiting factors for heavy-metal accumulation and tolerance, and to develop transgenic plants with an increased capacity to accumulate and/or tolerate heavy metals, the Escherichia coli gshII gene encoding glutat...

Optimizing phytoremediation of heavy metal-contaminated soil by exploiting plants' stress adaptation.

Soil phytoextraction is based on the ability of plants to extract contaminants from the soil. For less bioavailable metals, such as Pb, a chelator is added to the soil to mobilize the metal. The effect can be significant and in certain species, heavy metal accumulation can rapidly increase 10-fold. Accumulation of high levels of toxic metals may result in irreversible damage to the plant. Monit...

Heavy metal tolerance and accumulation in Indian mustard (Brassica juncea L.) expressing bacterial gamma-glutamylcysteine synthetase or glutathione synthetase.

The overexpression of either gamma-glutamylcysteine synthetase (gamma-ECS) or glutathione synthetase (GS) in Brassica juncea transgenics was shown previously to result in higher accumulation of glutathione (GSH) and phytochelatins (PCs), as well as enhanced Cd tolerance and accumulation. The present study was aimed at analyzing the effects of gamma-ECS or GS overexpression on tolerance to and a...
